A Hometown Street Fair
The 2nd Annual Court and Market Days of Leesburg will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008 and will celebrate more than just history! The streets of Historic Downtown Leesburg will be transformed into a festival area that beckons local residents to come and be a part of the festivities and see why Leesburg is called the “Hometown of the 21st Century.” Spend the day playing games, watching demonstrations, practicing handmade craft techniques, listening to local heritage music and of course, enjoying great festival foods. This street fair is designed to bring together Leesburg’s many residents, both life-long and new to the area, and join as a community to celebrate the town we call home.
During this street fair, festival-goers will also have the opportunity to view Leesburg the way it might have looked during the 19th Century and how it has progressed to the town it is today. History will come to life during Court and Market Days of Leesburg. When court was in session during the 18th and 19th Centuries, people from all over the county and beyond gathered here at the crossroads of Leesburg to conduct court business, shop local merchants, socialize with neighbors, and discuss current events. Two hundred and fifty years later, we examine this special time in Leesburg’s history. Take a stroll through the festival and see Leesburg’s roots as well as how we have progressed to today.
Just as the shops of Downtown Leesburg are an integral part of life today, so to were the vendors and peddlers that filled the streets during court days. Peddlers selling hand-made goods as well as demonstrators showing classic artesian techniques will be part of the day’s festivities. Local crafters, artisans, and vendors are invited to join this event. Other crafters and guilds willing to demonstrate their techniques are encouraged to join the show as well. Examples of crafts include weaving, candle making, soap making, pottery throwing, glass blowing, baked goods, and so many others. All hand-made craft items will be considered.
